Potato is becoming an increasingly important crop in Ethiopia, contributing to food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods. Despite its growing role, the origins of many local cultivars currently cultivated across the country remain unclear.
Globally, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) ranks as the third most significant food crop in terms of production, following rice and wheat. In several countries, including Ethiopia, potato is recognized as a food security crop due to its high yield potential, adaptability, and nutritional value.
Strengthening partnerships among research institutions, development organizations, and farmer groups is essential to improve the understanding of local cultivars, enhance seed systems, and promote the adoption of climate‑resilient varieties. Such collaboration ensures that potato continues to play a vital role in addressing hunger, supporting smallholder farmers, and contributing to sustainable agricultural development in Ethiopia.
